Did you know that horse teeth NEVER STOP ERUPTING from the gum?!?!
In the wild, nature managed this continuous growth through the horse’s diet, which consisted primarily of coarse grasses. Eating these grasses required a robust chewing motion that ground down the teeth naturally. Modern day domestication and breeding has introduced diets consisting of oats, grains, softer grasses, soaked feeds, etc. that do not require such powerful chewing. In turn, to keep our horses healthy and comfortable, we must manage their teeth for them.
Horse teeth floating is the process of evening out and removing sharp points and high ridges from teeth and correcting other dental misalignments to allow the horse to use the full grinding surface of their teeth.
Hannah uses a tool called a float, which has an abrasive surface typically made of diamond or carbide that is hard enough to grind down the raised edges of the teeth.
Routine dental examinations and floating should be scheduled once a year for most horses. However, more frequent evaluation may be needed for very old and very young horses as well as horses with severe dental misalignments.
Periodic equine dental floats offer a number of potential benefits, including:
A balanced mouth is essential to a horse’s overall health and performance. With specialized training and a deep understanding of equine dentistry, Hannah prioritizes balance in every horse she treats. She takes an individualized approach, focusing on corrective and balance floating to evaluate each mouth thoroughly. Her goal is always to preserve tooth integrity, promote long-term oral health, and ensure the horse’s comfort and well-being.
Maintenance Floats are performed on a regular schedule that is recommended every 6 months to a year - not to exceed 1 year.
*Additional Travel fees may apply if distance is beyond 1.5 hours
Balance Floats are generally performed on the first visit to a new client. The Balance Float is designed for horses who have surpassed the 1 year recommended threshold. Balance Floats require significantly more removal, shaping, and care based on dental conditions. Under most circumstances this service is a one time cost followed by Maintenance Float pricing provided a regular schedule is maintained.
Critical Balance Floats are performed on horses with extreme growth, misshaping, or distortion. Examples are "ramps, hooks, waves, steps, etc." This float is designed to restore the horses quality of life, level of daily comfort, and bring them back into a proper Maintenance Float schedule.
**Critical Assessments are ALWAYS made onsite. We vow to provide an honest rate dictated by the condition of the teeth and level of care required
